The true rookie card

A "rookie card" (RC) is the card carrying the official RC designation in a player's first licensed pro release.

Not a college card. Not a prospect card. Flagg's Duke and pre-draft cards are collectible, but they are not his rookie cards.

His true flagship rookie card is the 2025-26 Topps Basketball #201, the card that carries the official Rookie designation on Topps's flagship checklist.

Topps Chrome

The 2025-26 Topps Chrome #251 is the card every serious collector needs.

This is Flagg's primary Chrome rookie card, and it exists in a base version plus a deep tree of Refractors. A Refractor is a card with a shiny, rainbow-like coating, and it's the first meaningful step up from base.

The 2025-26 Topps Chrome release carries over 40 parallels, from standard Refractors and X-Fractors to numbered Gold (/50), Orange (/25), and the SuperFractor 1/1. A parallel is the same card printed in a different color or finish. The lower the serial number, the scarcer the card.

Which Topps Chrome parallels should you look for?

The strategy is tiered. Buy the base #251 for the broadest comp pool, meaning the largest set of comparable sales to price against. Step up to the standard Refractor for the first real upgrade. Only pursue numbered color (Gold /50, Orange /25) after you confirm the exact parallel and recent sales of that same card.

The value ceiling belongs to the low-numbered grails. The Silver Pack Superfractor auto is a trophy piece. The Refractor is the accessible entry.

The record sale

On September 25, 2026, Flagg's one-of-one 2025-26 Topps Chrome Updates Rookie Debut Patch autographed card sold for $8.04 million, with buyer's premium.

Read that number correctly. It is a single 1/1 with a game-worn debut patch and an on-card autograph. It is a dated fact about one specific card, not a benchmark for the base cards most collectors actually buy.

Which grade to target

The rule scales with scarcity.

For high-population base and Refractor cards, a PSA 10 is the grade that separates most from the pack. For genuinely scarce numbered cards and autographs, the grading calculus loosens because population is already low.

A simple ladder: the Topps Chrome #251 PSA 10 is the liquid entry, the standard Refractor #251 PSA 9 is the first meaningful upgrade, and documented numbered color is the premium target. For 1/1s and autos, condition still matters, but scarcity carries the card: the Silver Pack Superfractor auto had no numeric grade, only PSA authentication. The record-setting debut patch card graded PSA 10, with a 10 autograph grade.
